FOM encourages FOM PhD students to dedicate a separate chapter of their thesis to valorisation aspects of their PhD research. This chapter should address issues like:
- how can my PhD work contribute to the needs of society,
- are long term applications of my work conceivable,
- which actions should be made to achieve this etc.
The FOM Valorisation Chapter Prize emphasises the importance FOM attaches to valorisation and aims to make  PhD students more aware that application of their research results can be of importance for society.

The prize money is € 5,000.00; the winner is free to choose how to spend this amount. The Valorisation Chapter Prize is awarded annually during Physics@FOM Veldhoven in January.  All (former) FOM PhD students who have since obtained their doctorate and who included a valorisation chapter in their dissertation may compete for the prize.

Entering/nominating someone
From 2009 FOM PhD students who wish to be considered for this prize can apply in the year they defend their thesis. Supervisors can also nominate their PhD students. To enter or nominate someone, you must fill in the entry form that can be downloaded from this page. You must send this form together with three copies of the dissertation to the secretary of the selection committee, Drs. F.L.A. van de Pavert, Stichting FOM, Postbus 3021, 3502 GA Utrecht. The regulation can be found on the Dutch website www.fom.nl/prizes.

Selection
The winner will be selected on the basis of this separate valorisation chapter by a committee comprising two members of the FOM Board of Governors. They will judge the applications on aspects such as:
  • creativity and realism of the possibilities for using knowledge that have been brought forward,
  • valorisation efforts performed by the candidates during their research.
The nominations for the FOM Valorisation Chapter Prize 2012 can be submitted until 1 April 2012.

For further information please contact: Floor van de Pavert, telephone +31 (0)30 600 12 22.
