Postdoc position: Phase Separation in Ultracold Metastable Helium gas

Research
The goal of the project is to observe phase separation of a gas mixture of 3He and 4He atoms. In the experimental setup we (laser) cool and trap helium atoms in the metastable 2 3S1 state towards quantum degeneracy: Bose-Einstein Condensation for 4He and Fermi degeneracy for 3He (temperature ~0.001 mK). Very recently we transfered the ultracold clouds of helium atoms from a cloverleaf magnetic trap into an optical dipole trap (wavelength 1557 nm). We hope to observe phase separation applying absorption imaging of both isotopes inside the dipole trap. Feshbach resonances may be exploited to modify the boson-fermion interaction strength which is expected to affect the phase separation process.
