PhD position: Attosecond measurements of ultrafast electron dynamics

Research
In the last few years, the ability to produce attosecond laser pulses (1 as = 0.001 fs = 10-18 s) by high-harmonic generation (HHG) has created exciting new opportunities for studying electronic processes. While previously most knowledge about electronic processes was obtained from frequency-domain spectroscopic studies, it has now become possible to study electronic processes time-resolved on their natural - attosecond - timescale.

Job description
In this project, which is linked to the establishment of an EU network coordinated by AMOLF, we will explore the application of attosecond laser pulses towards time-resolved studies of electron dynamics in plasmonic systems, such as C60 molecules and surface-deposited nano-particles. In addition, we will explore the possibility to use near-field enhancement in surface-deposited nano-structures as a means to produce attosecond pulses at a high repetition rate.

The successful candidate will have a MSc. in physics or chemistry, ideally with experience in either laser physics, optics, electronics and vacuum technology, as well as a strong background and/or interest in quantum mechanics.

Conditions of Employment
When fulfilling a PhD position at the FOM foundation, you will get the status of junior scientist.
You will have an employee status and can participate in all the employee benefits FOM offers. You will get a contract for 4 years. Your salary will be up to a maximum of 2,610 euro gross per month.
You are supposed to have a thesis finished at the end of your four year term with FOM.
A training programme is part of the agreement. You and your supervisor will make up a plan for the additional education and supervising that you specifically need. This plan also defines which teaching activities you will be responsible (up to a maximum of 10% of your time). The conditions of employment of the FOM-foundation are laid down in the Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres (CAO-Onderzoekinstellingen), more exclusive information is available at this website under Personeelsinformatie (in Dutch) or under Personnel (in English).
General information about working at FOM can be found in the English part of this website under Personnel. The 'FOM-sollicitatiecode' (in Dutch) applies to this position.
