Research
Theoretical / computational studies based upon the ab-initio solution of the Schrödinger equation have been extremely successful in providing a detailed understanding of the properties of condensed matter. Advanced algorithms and supercomputers make it possible to extend the scope of such studies to materials which are artificially structured on the nanometre scale. These three projects are concerned with developing new theoretical / computational approaches and applying them to three currently 'hot' topics: graphene; oxide heterostructures; the control of magnetism on short time and legth scales.
Job description
Common to all three projects is the use of ab-initio electronic calculations to study the physical properties (magnetic, optical and electrical) of condensed matter and to relate them to their chemical composition and atomic structure. Candidates will be expected:
- to acquire a broad knowledge of theoretical condensed matter physics,
- to study in detail modern methods of electronic structure theory,
- to develop new theoretical methods in a form suitable for numerical implementation and
- to apply them in the relevant problem areas.

Candidates should have an M.Sc. degree in physics (or chemistry) with a specialization in theory, should have an affinity for working with computers and a good command of English.
Conditions of Employment
When fulfilling a PhD position at the FOM foundation, you will get the status of junior scientist.
You will have an employee status and can participate in all the employee benefits FOM offers. You will get a contract for 4 years. Your salary will be up to a maximum of 2,610 euro gross per month.
You are supposed to have a thesis finished at the end of your four year term with FOM.
A training programme is part of the agreement. You and your supervisor will make up a plan for the additional education and supervising that you specifically need. This plan also defines which teaching activities you will be responsible (up to a maximum of 10% of your time). The conditions of employment of the FOM-foundation are laid down in the Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres (CAO-Onderzoekinstellingen), more exclusive information is available at this website under
Personeelsinformatie (in Dutch) or under
Personnel (in English).
General information about working at FOM can be found in the English part of this website under
Personnel. The
'FOM-sollicitatiecode' (in Dutch) applies to this position.
