Experiments during Physics with Industry 2011
Information about the workshop
The goal of Physics with Industry is get young scientists acquainted with industrial research. In a (very active) week they search for a solution to an urgent physics problem from industry. The scientists will be supported by senior researchers and researchers from the company itself.
In 2011 the following companies participated: Avery Dennison, FEI, Nano4Imaging, Océ en Unilever. For more information see the website of the
Lorentz Center.
Registration
Physics with Industry 2012 will take place from 19 to 23 November in the Lorentz Center in Leiden. Keep an eye on the FOM Website or follow FOM on Twitter (@FOMphysics) for more information.
History
The workshop Physics with Industry was organized for the first time in 2010. However, the concept is very experienced. Since its start in Cambridge in 1968 mathematics workshops are organized annually all over the world by the
'International Study Group Mathematics with Industry'. Both large and small companies are very enthusiastic about the concept. Besides the immediate workshop results these workshops led to new collaborative projects and job opportunities for researchers at the participating companies.

"Thanks to Physics with Industry we could acquire a lot of knowledge in a very short space of time about a subject that was relatively new for us. This has resulted in a research project at NXP. If that proves successful then we will probably contact the university partners again to see if they can help us with longer term research. Besides the direct outcomes in terms of knowledge and contacts, I think that a workshop such as Physics with Industry also challenges companies to think about the fundamental limits of their current products, a process that can lead to breakthroughs and innovations." - Peter Steeneken (NXP)
