FOM --> NWO ≥ 2017
From 2017 onwards the current FOM organisation will form a new NWO organisation together with the other NWO units. During the course of 2017 all of the information on this website will be modified in accordance with the new organisation structure of NWO. For further information we refer you to the information page about the NWO transition.

The Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM) funds and carries out physics research in the Netherlands. FOM researchers work at two types of locations: institutes and research groups at universities.

Research fields
FOM's sphere of activities consists of eight research fields, which are sometimes referred to as subfields:
- Subatomic physics
- Nanophysics/-technology
- Condensed matter and optical physics
- Physics of life processes
- Fusion physics
- Phenomenological physics
- Other physics
- Spearhead fundamental energy research

Research grants and research programmes
FOM has a variety of research grants available for physics research. How FOM funds research is detailed in the section Research grants. The various research programmes can be found in the section Research programmes.

One of FOM's objectives is to initiate, help manage and grant access to national facilities for researchers from the Netherlands and abroad.
