Two Future and Emerging Technology (FET)-Flagships were selected by the European Commission (EC) in January 2013: Graphene and Human Brain Project (HBP). Both Flagships have a runtime of 10 years and a foreseen budget of 1 billion euro. Also in 2013, an ERA-NET (FLAG-ERA) was set up to support the Flagships and to coordinate the national efforts with respect to the Flagships. Almost all European countries participate in this programme that will run for three years. A Joint Transnational Call was launched in 2015 for projects complementary to the Flagships. FOM and NWO participated for projects complementary to the Graphene Flagship and the Human Brain Project, respectively. In 2016, the follow-up ERA-NET FLAG-ERA II was granted, which will run from 2016 to 2021. Within this ERA-NET a second Joint Transnational Call will be launched for both flagships.
FLAG-ERA and FLAG-ERA II contribute in two ways to the construction of the Flagships:
1) Facilitating the integration of nationally funded projects into the Flagship Core Projects.
2) Implementing a transnational call to fund projects that can be integrated into the Core Projects directly.
