Job description
This interdisciplinary PhD project will involve not only the understanding of MRI physics and inverse problems in the field of quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) but also collaboration and development of engineering solutions for ex-vivo imaging both at the Department of Anatomy (RadboudUMC) and the High Field Magnet Laboratory (HFML - FOM facility - Radboud University).
We expect to develop and validate complex models of magnetic susceptibility that can be used to convert the magnetic field measurements, as made in standard clinical MR scanners, into the magnetic properties of the white matter myelin sheath.

Location
You will be based at the Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging, a research centre of the Radboud University, which conducts cutting-edge fundamental and clinical research in cognitive neuroscience. This internationally renowned centre currently hosts more than 100 PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers from more than 25 countries, offering a stimulating and multidisciplinary research environment. The centre is equipped with four MRI scanners (7T, 3x 3T) and high-performance computational facilities.
English is the lingua franca at the centre.
Radboud University Nijmegen is one of the leading academic communities in the Netherlands. Situated in the oldest city of the Netherlands, it has nine faculties and enrols over 17,500 students in 107 study programmes.
The successful candidate will work in the Magnetic Resonance Techniques research group, a young and interantional lab, which is currently home to five PhD students and three postdocs.
Particularly in this project, you will work in close collaboration with the High Field Magnet Laboratory (NWO large scale facility located in Nijmegen) and the Department of Anatomy (RadboudUMC).

Requirements

  • A MSc degree or equivalent in a field related to physics, electric engineering or biomedical imaging;
  • experience with empirical research and quantitative data analysis;
  • experience with programming (MATLAB);
  • experience with dealing with iterative minimization problems is a plus;
  • a good command of written and spoken English;
  • the interdisciplinary nature of this project requires excellent social skills and team spirit.

Conditions of employment
You will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years.
When fulfilling a PhD position at the FOM Foundation, you will get the status of junior scientist.
You will have an employee status and can participate in all the employee benefits FOM offers. You will get a contract for four years. Your salary will be up to a maximum of 2,834 euro gross per month.The salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8 percent and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33 percent.
You are supposed to have a thesis finished at the end of your four year term with FOM.
A training programme is part of the agreement. You and your supervisor will make up a plan for the additional education and supervising that you specifically need. This plan also defines which teaching activities you will be responsible (up to a maximum of ten percent of your time).
