This project is part of a new research direction that we aim to develop based on our extensive experience for multi-scale modelling op laser-induced nonequilibrium dynamics of magnetism. On the one hand, it aims to predict how solid state magnetic materials can be dynamically manipulated to exhibit learning behavior, a property usually associated with the brain. On the other hand, it aims to exploit neural principles to describe the dynamics of quantum spin systems more efficiently on classical computers using concepts from machine learning. Basing on methodologies from condensed matter theory, both approaches will be developed in close connection with theoretical neuroscience and experimental condensed matter physicists, ultimately aimed at enabling information processing concepts that operate at orders of magnitude lower energy cost than existing technology.

Job description
This position is part of a recent initiative for stimulating fundamental and applied research in the area of computational science for energy research funded jointly by NWO and Shell. The position is embedded in an ongoing collaboration between an experimental and theory group in the field of multiscale modeling of ultrafast magnetism that is currently being extended towards theoretical neuroscience. The candidate will combine analytical and computational tools for multiscale modeling of nonequilibrium magnetism. The candidate will obtain training and perform research in the above-mentioned area, publish results in leading journals and have the chance to participate in national and international schools and conferences.

Strategically located in Europe, Radboud University is one of the leading academic communities in the Netherlands. It is a place with a personal touch, where top-notch education and research take place on a beautiful green campus, in modern buildings with state-of-the-art facilities. At Radboud University, we teach and perform research covering the full breadth of the academic spectrum. The atmosphere on campus is open and personal, which stimulates colleagues to share their knowledge beyond the boundaries of their own discipline. It encourages all to look further, to see more. Thus, Radboud University contributes to the development of new perspectives within science and within society. This makes Radboud University successful and of international importance. Our research is embedded in the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM), which strives to fundamentally understand, design and control the functioning of molecules and materials. We offer a first class and international research environment with various theoretical and computational research topics and projects targeted to support and stimulate experiments.

We seek excellent and highly motivated candidates with a MSc degree in Physics or equivalent qualification. Exceptional candidates with a strong background in theoretical and computational condensed matter physics are particularly encouraged to apply. The candidate must have strong communication skills, including fluency in written and spoken English.

Conditions of employment
When fulfilling a PhD position at NWO-I, you will get the status of junior scientist. You will have an employee status and can participate in all the employee benefits NWO-I offers. You will get a contract for four years. Your salary will be up to a maximum of 2,834 euro gross per month. The salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8 percent and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33 percent. You are supposed to have a thesis finished at the end of your four year term with NWO-I. A training programme is part of the agreement. You and your supervisor will make up a plan for the additional education and supervising that you specifically need. This plan also defines which teaching activities you will be responsible (up to a maximum of ten percent of your time). The conditions of employment of NWO-I are laid down in the Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres (Cao-Onderzoekinstellingen), more exclusive information is available at this website under Personeelsinformatie (in Dutch) or under Personnel (in English). General information about working at NWO-I can be found in the English part of this website under Personnel. The 'Job interview code' applies to this position.
